Alex’s parents, Victor and Lourdes Rodriguez, are Dominican immigrants and he has two older half-siblings, Joe and Suzy, from the first marriage of his mother. Alex Rodriguez began his professional career signing with The Seattle Mariners in 1993. They signed a contract for a period of three years. Alex debuted as minor league player in 1994 with the Appleton Foxes of the Class A Midwest League, and after one game he has been promoted to the Jacksonville Suns of the Class AA Southern League where he played 17 games. In July of same year, Alex debuted in the major league as a starting shortstop. This achievement made Alex the third 18-year-old major league shortstop since 1900 and the youngest position player in Seattle history. During his contract with Seattle, Alex was nominated and won the title of Players Choice AL Player of the Year, two Silver Slugger Awards. In 2000, Alex has been selected as Major League Player of the Year by Baseball America.
In 2000, Alex became a free agent and signed with the Texas Rangers for a period of 10 years and with $252 million worth. In 2003 season, Alex won the second consecutive Gold Glove Award and it was the last season of him with Texas Rangers. At the end of 2003 season, Texas Rangers and Alex found out a solution to close their collaboration and the expensive deal. In this way, they sent Alex to the Boston Red Sox for Manny Ramirez.
In 2004, Texas Rangers traded Alex to New York Yankees for two players: Alfonso Soriano ( the second baseman ) and a player that has been named later, Joaquín Árias.
2007 year was the last year of contract between Alex and Texas Rangers. After their collaboration ended, Alex became again a free agent declaring that he would like to sign a new contract with The Yankees. On 15 November 2007, Alex and The New York Yankees agreed a “basic framework” for 10 years.
The last year under The New York Yankees agreement was 2017. In January 2017, Alex’s spokesman declared that he will not play in the coming year and is possible that him to remain the “special advisor” to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. Alex’s final game was on 12 August 2017.
During his career, Alex was a 14-time All-Star, won three American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards, ten Silver Slugger Awards and two Gold Glove Awards.
In 2007, Alex has been accused of steroid use but he denied. In February 2009 he admitted that he used steroids in 2001-2003 period “ due to an enormous amount of pressure to perform”. Alex has been suspended for 162 games and he missed the entire season of 2014.
After 2017 season, Alex became also a media personality as a broadcaster for Fox Sports 1, a cast member of Shark Tank and as a member of the ABC News network.
