Katherine Noel Valentine Brosnahan was born on 24 December 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri. Katherine passed away on 05 June 2018 and her professional name was Kate Spade and Kate Valentine. She was known as an American fashion designer and businesswoman.

Kate Spade was mostly Irish descent and was the daughter of June (Mullen) and Earl Francis Brosnahan. Her father, Earl Francis Brosnahan, owned a road-construction company. Kate Spade had a simple childhood and for her education, she graduated St. Teresa’s Academy then she attended the University of Kansas from where she transferred to Arizona State University. At Arizona State University, she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and graduated in 1985, having a journalism degree. At Arizona State University, Kate had met her future husband, Andy Space and after 1986 they started living together. In 1994, Kate married with Andy Spade and in 2005 their daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, was born.

In her family she has also members that are celebrities as her brother in law, David Spade, and her niece, Rachel Brosnahan, both of them being known as actors.

Kate Spade started her career as journalist in 1986, when she worked at “Mademoiselle” magazine, accessories department. She worked there till 1991, when she left the magazine with the title of Senior Fashion Editor/Head of Accessories. In the time spent working for this magazine, Kate realized that the “stylish and sensible handbags” are missing from the market and she decided to create her own handbags line. She declared “I was looking for something that could be less serious. More personal”.

In January 1993, Kate launched her own based-company “Kate Spade handbags”. Kate Spade worthShe launched it in association with Andy Spade, her boyfriend at that time. Kate’s desire was to create “… a functional bag that was sophisticated and had some style”. In the beginning, Kate did six prototypes with Scotch Tape and paper. The bags became popular in New York and because of price, very cheap, the women could afford also more than one bag.

Kate’s company extended later also in other sections as clothing, jewelry, shoes, stationery, eyewear, baby items, fragrances, tabletop, bedding and gifts.

In 1996, Kate opened her first boutique, then, in 2004, she is launching a home collection brand with bedding, bath items, china, wallpaper and various items for the home. In the same year, Kate is opening a store in Aoyama, Tokyo in Japan.

Kate sold her company to Neiman Marcus Group ( in 1999 – 56 percent and in 2006 the rest of 44 percent). Neiman Marcus Group sold it later to Liz Claiborne Inc. for $124 million and Kate’s company has been renamed by Fifth & Pacific in “Kate Spade & Company”. In the present, Kate Spade & Company has more than 140 shops across United States and over 175 shops internationally.

From 2006 till 2016, Kate took a pause for raising her daughter. In 2016 she came back and launched, with her partners, a new collection of luxury footwear and handbags. This new collection appeared under brand name “Frances Valentine”. “Frances Valentine” brand was launched by Kate and her husband, Andy, in association with some of their friends and the shoe designer Paola Venturi.

Kate Spade wrote three books “Manners”, “Occasions” and “Style”. All three books were released in 2004 and, through them, Kate shared her personal style and philosophies.

On 05 June 2018, Kate Spade passed away. According to law enforcement officials it was a suicide, Kate being found dead in her apartment from Manhattan by her housekeeper. She found Kate hanged herself by a scarf tied to a door and there was a note for Kate’s daughter.

After Kate’s dead, her husband, Andy Spade declared that she had severe depression for more than six years : “She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives” , “There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock”.

When Kate passed away, their daughter Frances Beatrix was only 13 years old and she didn’t attend to her mother’s funeral. Andy Spade declared “Katie and I shared everything; a life, [and] a beautiful little girl who couldn’t make it today because she is just too torn up to do much of anything right now.”

During her career, Kate Spade received several awards. In 1996, CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) awarded her with “America’s New Fashion Talent in Accessories” and in 1998 with “Best Accessory Designer of the Year” title. In 2004, she received 3 awards for the design of home collection: House Beautiful’s “Giants of Design Award for Tastemaker”, Bon Appetit’s “American Food and Entertaining Award for Designer of the Year”, and Elle Decor’s “Elle Decor International Design Award for Bedding”.
