The Indian actress Mumtaz, on her full name Mumtaz Madhvani, was born on 31 July 1947 and her parents were Abdul Saleem Askari and Shadi Habib Agha. Abdul Saleem Askari was a dry fruits vendor and Shadi Habib Agha had as origin Iran country. Mumtaz parent’s marriage was a short one and they divorced one year later after Mumtaz was born.
After their divorce, Mumtaz’s mother, Shadi Habib Agha, took and grown up both of her daughters -Mumtaz and her younger sister Malika. At the divorce, Mumtaz’s mother was very young, she was having only 16 years old and after a while she got married again and had 2 sons ( one of them died and the other, nameed Shah Rukh Askari, is living now in Mumbai. Mumtaz’s sister, Malika, is an actress too and she was married to Indian actor Randhawa – the younger brother of actor Dara Singh.
Despite parent’s divorce, Mumtaz is declaring that her childhood was a wonderful one and she has been grown up by her grandmother, mother and aunt. The family went to a financial crisis and Mumtaz with her sister Malika decided to start working in the film industry in order to help.
In this way, Mumtaz started her film career since she was a child. Her first apparition was in 1958 in the movie Sone Ki Chidiya. In the 1960’s, she continued to have minor roles in Vallah Kya Baat Hai, Stree and Sehra films.
As adult she started to play in roles in “ A – grade films” , having first small roles. Her first role in “A – grade films” was the role of the sister of the hero in O. P. Ralhan’s Gehra Daag (1963) . Other successful film where Mumtaz played a minor role was Mujhe Jeene Do, released in same year with O. P. Ralhan’s Gehra Daag. After these minor roles, Mumtaz played also as main heroine in several films like Faulad, Veer Bhimsen, Tarzan Comes to Delhi, Sikandar-E-Azam, Rustom-E-Hind, Raaka and Daku Mangal Singh.
For Mumtaz, the real success and people appreciation came with the movie Do Raaste (1969). „Do Raaste” has been directed by Raj Khosla and Mumtaz had a minor role but she considers this movie one of her favorites movies.
The most important role of her career, was the role from “Chaand” – she played there the role of a prostitute, Kilona ( Mumtaz was the only actress that accepted the role). With this role, Mumtaz is wining the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1970.
Excepting the award from 1970 for Filmfare Best Actress, during film career, Mumtaz won also the BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress – Brahmachari (1968), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1996), IIFA Outstanding Contribution by an Indian in Cinema, Honorary Award (2008) and she was nominated for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award – Ram Aur Shyam (1967) and Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award – Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969).
Mumtaz worked for 16 years in the film industry and had as colleagues, famous actors like Dilip Kumar (Ram Aur Shyam), Dev Anand (Hare Krishna Hare Ram and Tere Mere Sapne), Dharmendra (Loafer and Aadmi Aur Insaan), Rajesh Khanna (Apna Desh, Prem Kahani and Sachaa Jhutha) and Sunil Dutt (Humraz and Nagin). She made a successful pair on screen with Rajesh Khanna and they played togheter as a pair in 10 films.
In this 16 years of work, Mumtaz had also affairs with some of their colleagues, the most serious being the relation with Shami Kapoor. It was a love relationship and existed also the discussion of a possible marriage but their ideas were different and the relation ended. Shami didn’t want his wife to work in film industry and Mumtaz was too young to quit acting career for enjoy the family life.
Mumtaz is deciding to end her career in 1977, after the film Aaina (1977) was finished. Her decision was related with her personal life, Mumtaz choising to focus on family life. She got married to businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974.
Actually they are still married and have 2 daughters : Tanya which is living in Rome with her husband Marco Cilia and their son and Natasha which is married with Fardeen Khan ( the son of actor Feroz Khan ). Mumtaz was knowing Feroz Khan before their children marriage because they have worked together in successful films such as Mela (1971), Apradh (1972) and Nagin (1976).
In 1990, Mumtaz came back on the big screen, after 13 years of quit, in the feature film “Aandhiyan” . “Aandhiyan” is the last film for Mumtaz.
In 2010 she accepts to play also in the documentary drama “ 1 a Minute” . This documentary is directed by Namrata Singh Gujral, an Indian American Actress, and is based on her real life and other women lifes that suffered of cancer. Mumtaz is one of these women that was diagnosed with breast cancer but after treatments and chemo sessions she won the battle.
Now Mumtaz is 71 years old and she is living in London with her husband Mayur Madhvani.
