Prince William or by his full name William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor was born in June 21st of 1982. He is part of the British royal family and grandson of Queen Elizabeth II. His parents, Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana got married in 1981 one year before he was born. Prince William is the second in line to the British throne.
Since he was very young he showed interested in the army and military duties, when he was only 7 years old, he told Princess Diana that he wanted to be a police officer so he could protect her.
At the age of 1 year old, William started attending to events with his parents on official tours. He even went to Australia and New Zealand with them. This was a very unusual fact because the first and second in line to the British throne were not supposed to travel together. William made his first public appearance when he was only 9 years old and he has been followed by the media and paparazzi since then.
During 1991 he was accidentally hit in the forehead by another student in a golf club. He was hospitalized and suffered a fractured in his skull. He made some jokes about this incident saying he got a harry potter’s scar.
When it comes to his education, Prince William attended different schools. He first begun in Jane Mynors’ nursery school, then he went to Wetherby Pre-preparatory School in London. After this, he went to Ludgrove School which was located very close to Wokingham within Berkshire. In summers he was tutored by Rory Stewart. He graduated from high school and then he took an exam to be admitted to Eton College. He got accepted. This was a very unconventional decision since all members of the royal family were traditional sent to Gordonstoun. At Eton College he studied Geography, Biology, and History of Art.
William finished college and then took a sabbatical year. In 2000, he traveled and participated in the British Army training exercises located in Belize, visited Africa and Chile. When he was participating in the Raleigh International program he lived with other volunteers and had to follow the same duties as everyone else. He even had to clean up the toilets. The next year, 2001, he returned to United Kingdom and started his master degree studies at the University of St Andrews. His degree major was firstly in Art History but later he decided to change to Geography.
In 2003 Prince William began dating Catherine Middleton, a university’s flatmate. The couple was spotted together in public for the first time in William’s passing-out parade at Sandhurst. Since then, they were followed by the paparazzi everywhere. It was April of 2007 when the couple decided to split up. Some months later, they were seen together again and they continued their relationship. During November of 2010 their engagement was announced and only 5 months later they got married in Westminster Abbey, London. Before getting married, William received the titles of Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus.
An interesting fact is that previously to the wedding, the couple initiated a gift fund sponsored by The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry in order to raise money as a present for their wedding and then donate it to different institutions they picked.
In regards to his military development, William first approach to the army was in October of 2005. He went through a selection to become an army officer which he passed and was admitted to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After finishing the course, the Prince received the title of Second Lieutenant and his father Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II attended the parade where he received the honors. After that he spent four months training in the Bovington Camp in Dorset.
Considering his title and future in royal position, to be an army officer and with that having the possibility to be sent to combat, it was decided to retire William from that role. Instead he was welcomed to the Royal Air Force. After his training, he repatriated the body of Trooper Robert Pearson from Afghanistan in a C-17 Globemaster. After his period in the Royal Air Force, the prince joined and started training in the Royal Navy. He participated in a mission together with United States’ coast guard that arrested a speedboat that carried 900 kg (2,000 lb.) of cocaine. Finally, as mentioned before, giving William’s role in the royal family, he could not remain in the army and develop a long term career so he had to leave this position. He joined the Royal Air Force and started training to become a search and rescue helicopter pilot.
At the end of December of 2012 the world received the news that the Prince William and Kate Middleton were expecting their first child. On July of 2013, Kate was hospitalized and gave birth to their son, Prince Charles, in the same place where her husband was born, in Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, London. The next year, at the beginning of September, William’s second child was on his way.
The couple announced that Kate Middleton was pregnant. Princes Charlotte was born on May 2nd of 2015 and this took place in the same hospital that her father and brother were born as well. Finally, William and Kate’s third child, Prince Louis was born on April 23rd of 2018.
