Sridevi was a popular Indian actress and producer who worked in a lot of Indian movies. It is known that Sridevi was born in Tamil Nadu to a lawyer and she had always been interested in the film industry.
Sridevi Bio
Sridevi was born on 13 August 1963 and her full name was Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan. Sridevi father’s name was Ayyapan Yanger and her mother’s name was Rajeswari Yanger. Sridevi had also one sister and two step brothers.
She started her career in 1967, at age of four, when she got the chance to work in Tamil industry. She played in
“Kandan Karunai” and then in “Thunaivan” the role of young Muruga. This early debut, made Sridevi loose her childhood. In an interview, in 2013, she declared : “I lost out on going to school and college life but I got into the film industry and worked without a gap – from child actor I went straight to heroine. There was no time to think and I was grateful for it”, “In order to get something you have to lose something. You can’t have everything in life. So I am happy with what I got.”.
In 1970, Sridevi debuted in Telegu cinema also. The debut film was “Maa Nanna Nirdoshi”.
She gained a lot of popularity in South India Film industry before entering the Bollywood and she made performance as a child artist in movies like Poompatta (1971), Kandan Karunai (1967), Nam Naadu (1969), Prarthanai (1970), Babu (1971), Badi Panthulu (1972), Bala Bharatam (1972), Vasantha Maaligai (1972) and Bhakta Kumbara (1974). The debut in Bollywood was in 1975 with “Julie” and she played the younger sister of the lead actress.
Being only a child, for the film shootings, between 1972 and 1993, she was always accompanied by her mother Rajeshwari or by her sister Srilatha.
During her film career, from 1967 till 2007, Sridevi performed in 63 movies in Hindi, 62 in Telugu, 58 in Tamil and 21 in Malyalam. The successful Sridevi’s pairs on the screen were Kamal Hasan in 1977-1983 period in Tamil films, Jeetendra in Hindi films during 1983-1988, Rajesh Khanna, Anil Kapoor from late 80’s till 1996. Jeetendra, was the actor that helped Sridevi to establish herself in Hindi films.
Sridevi did also some pauses in her career. First pause was from 1997 till 2004, when she appeared in TV series as the sitcom “Malini Iyer” (2004–2005) or the TV show “Kaboom”.
During 2010 – 2012, Sridevi took another break and she reappeared in 2012 through the comedy-drama “English Vinglish” (2012). The film has been appreciated by the The Times of India as the “one of the best films of 2012” and Sridevi’s performance has been called “a masterclass for actors”.
In 2017 Sridevi is appearing in her home production film “Mom”. “Mom” film is the 300th film of Sridevi and received many positive reviews.
Sridevi received many awards and nominations for her acting performance like National Film Award for Best Actress and the nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and Screen Award for Best Actress.
Regarding her personal life, Sridevi was always very discreet and she rarely spoke about her private life in the interviews. It is know that she lost her father in 1991 and her mother in 1995 ( due to some complications after a brain tumor operation).
In 1996, Sridevi married to producer Boney Kapoor and they had 2 daughters, Janhvi born in 1997 and Khushi born in 2000.
Sridevi performed also as a dancer and she had inclinations for painting too. In March 2010, she sold her paintings and all the money raised have been donated.
Sridevi is well known also on the fashion world, she being called by media as a fashion icon. Her debut in fashion was in 2008 were she modelled the products of designers Priya and Chintan at the Lakme Fashion Week. Next year, Sridevi appeared at the HDIL India Couture Week and presented the jewelry designer Queenie Dhodhy’s collection. In 2010 she re-appeared at Lakme Fashion Week and in 2012 she participated at Delhi Couture Week. Other contributions in the fashion world were her appearances on the cover of several magazines as Hi Blitz with the tagline “The Goddess Returns”, Marie Claire, L’Officiel or Vogue.
Sridevi’s life ended suddenly and the date of 24 February 2018 came to shock the Indian people.
In that day, in the evening, Sridevi took her last breath in Dubai where she went to participate at the wedding of her nephew, Mohit Marwah. She passed away while she was taking a bath and the cause of her death is known to be as Cardiac Arrest but remained unclear if the dead occurred before or after the drowning.
On 28 February 2018, her funeral took place at the Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium in Mumbai where she has been cremated. The funeral procession took place with state honors and a gun salute. Sridevi was regretted by all her colleagues from film industry, public personalities (as the politician Narendra Modi – the Prime Minister of India) and thousands of fans.
This year, Sridevi has been included in The Memoriam section of 90th Academy Awards Ceremony. Sridevi’s last appearance on the screen will be in the film Zero (December 2018).
